We performed our assembly today all about last half term’s topic on Oceans. We explained about what oceans there are, read poetry, showed our Dazzle pictures, showed our posters about ocean pollution, read information about different animals and showed the film of our ocean dances, which you can still view below. The class were all fabulous, especially as we only started rehearsing it on Monday. Well done all of us!!
Unfortunately, the assembly was too long to put it all on the website, so we have just put up a video of the song we sang at the end of the assembly. And before that, you will find a slide-show of photos taken during the assembly.
We started our new topic, which is How can we improve playtimes? We wrote a questionnaire all about playtimes, which we filled in, as well as e-mailing it to all the teachers that do duty. We thought of different ideas about what we could buy, to improve playtimes, and next we are going to think about how we could raise money.
In numeracy, we have been looking at tally charts, bar charts and Venn Diagrams. We walked to Birchfields Road and had a look at what the most popular colour of car is (silver) and what colour is the least popular (pink!!).
In literacy, we have been working on describing characters and how we could add this to our stories.
We have also done gym, games, RE, spellings, ICT, guided reading, and a bit of Friday afternoon golden time.
As part of last half-term’s topic on what lives in the ocean?, we explored how ocean creatures move and put them together in a dance. See the results of all the hard work below. Sorry about the quality of the video, but you get the general idea. If it keeps stopping, pause it until it loads up properly. Enjoy!!
As part of our topic on What lives in the ocean?, we invited parents to come in to take part in our arts week. Lots of parents came in to help, and they were very helpful!! Thank you to everyone who came in, we’ll definitely be inviting you back again!! Have a look at the photos below to see what we got up to…
The January transfer window was busier in 2P than it was for either Manchester City or United, with 2 new faces in the class and one person leaving us. First the sad news, with Aneesa leaving us to join Oswald Road in Chorlton. Aneesa always had a smile on her face and good things to say about everyone. The whole class liked her loads and she is going to be missed very much by everyone, especially by Miss Coombes and Mr Pickering. Good luck Aneesa!
We have had two boys joining our class, first Fuaad and then a week later, Abdur joined us. They have both made a very good start to the class and made lots of friends. We intervied them both in literacy, making notes and then putting these into sentences. This is what we found out:
Abdur has one brother who is four years old, and two sisters that are 8 and 5. Fuaad has 3 sisters and they are 12, 7 and 1. Abdur’s birthday is in March and Fuaad’s is in June. Abdur likes apples, Ben 10, watching TV and the colour blue, whereas Fuaad likes cake, Harry Potter, Manchester United and relaxing!
We have designed our own sea creatures, as part of our topic on What do you find in the ocean? We then used these in literacy to write lots and lots of describing words and we even wrote poems about them. Have a look at the creatures we created below. Scary, aren’t they??
… we have worked really hard. Well, most of us anyway…
In literacy, we wrote poems all about the sea creatures we had created during ICT. We then typed them up in this week’s ICT lesson. Next week we will put some of the poems up on here for everyone to see. They are fabulous!!
In numeracy we learnt all about rounding numbers to the nearest ten. We also looked at greater than and less than.
We also talked a lot about the earthquake in Haiti and decided that we were all very lucky to have all the things we have in our lives and wrote about them.In science we we learnt about habitats and animals that live in or around a pond. We also wrote a soundtrack to Finding Nemo in topic, with a little help from our good friend Mr Bradley, and danced like fish again in PE.
We’ve all had a good week, but Mr Pickering and Miss Coombes are VERY happy that it’s the weekend!
After all the disruption caused by the snow last week, it was back to school for everyone and a lot of hard work.
This is what we have been up to:
In numeracy we have been adding and subtracting REALLY big numbers. We can now add or take away any two numbers up to 99, and some of us can do numbers up to 999! WOW!! We have learnt how to do this in two different ways, using a 100 hundred square and by partitioning, so that we can check our answers using a different method.
In Literacy we were thinking of different describing words to describe creatures that live in the ocean. We are going to use all these ideas next week to write poetry.
In our Oceans topic, we were looking at where the oceans are in the world and what they are called. The oceans we looked at are the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean. And they are all very BIG!!
In science, we talked about all the different living things that we might find around school. We walked around around school and looked at all the different trees and plants. We also had a look for creepy-crawlies, but they were all hiding from the snow.
We also made thank you cards for someone special in RE, looked at compound spellings, did lots of guided reading and danced like we were diving fish.
18 members of 2P braved the snow and ice to make it into school today. They were all glad they did as we finished the day with a huge snow fight with the rest of year 2, which was lots of fun! Have a look at the photos below.
So it’s the last week before Christmas. We haven’t done much in the way of numeracy, literacy or science, but we have managed to keep ourselves very busy! The main event of the week was of course the Christmas Performance on the Tursday, performed with 5K, reception and the choir. 2P were AMAZING and you can see all the photos on the main Birchfields News page by clicking here.
The other big event of the week was the Christmas party on the Tuesday. As always, 2P know how to throw a good party, and everyone had lots of fun. The afternoon included a trip to the hall to have a bit of a sing with the rest of Key Stage 1 and see a very special visitor. See the photos of the party below.
